Abstract

This article aims at finding the basis for family protocol optimization in family businesses in Peru, as a mechanism for business growth towards professionalism and development (LEACH, 1996, AMAT, 2001, PIZARRO, 2007; BOWMAN- UPTON, 2008). Specifically, this article looks at informality and family businesses gradually disappearance, by addressing important variables within four concepts: circles of ownership, family governance bodies, the importance of family protocol and family succession planning. Thus, a qualitative-exploratory research was undertaken, based on in-depth interviews with three specialists and one family business owner. The research utilized nineteen variables related to the Peruvian context for the optimization of the family protocol agreement. The research confirmed that business-family system involves carrying out the creation of the family protocol agreement and, thus, succession planning, which is the main problem of family businesses worldwide (DODERO, 2005).
