Abstract
Through a meta-analysis of 54 studies, we quantitatively synthesize the literature on informal economy from an institutional perspective. We suggest and demonstrate that the prevalence of business informality in a country responds to the institutional environment, including legal, political, economic, capital markets, and pro-business institutions. Overall, our study summarizes the literature on institutions and informal economy and offers a useful guide for future research
