Descripción

Using household survey data for Peru in 2004 -2021, we answer two questions: What is the pattern of occupational gender distribution and its evolution? What are the main drivers of said distribution? Findings show that occupational segregation conforms to the international evidence and it has remained largely stable over time. Second, we find important associations between personal and demographic regressors as well as macro variables and occupational gender segregation. Female educational attainment is not reflected in greater gender equity, and being a married women and having children reduces labor participation and increases occupational segregation. Our findings confirm that gender roles discriminate women and negatively affect their labor participation.
