Experiencia social y misión en la Iglesia Católica de América Latina en el siglo XX: Revisión de la literatura y aportes

Research output: Contribution to journalReview article

Abstract

The article presents the relevance of Virgilio Vidal y Uría in the development of the Catholic press and of a heterodox Catholicism in Peru at the beginning of the last century, in the context of Catholic activism facing the secularizing process of the state and society. Priest, journalist, and publicist, he ex-pressed his commitment to Catholic militancy since 1880, by developing an active anti-liberal and anti-Protestant pedagogy among the urban masses and then, through various newspa-pers, he contributed to the Catholic presence in the modern public space. In this article his ideas on Catholicism, modern expressions, and journalism are studied, as well as his confron-tation with the archbishop Manuel Tovar and the ecclesiastical hierarchy of Lima. The article may help to outline the trajec-tory of some Catholics who, sometimes showing their clerical discrepancies, constituted an effort to bring Catholicism clo-ser to the urban masses.
