Professional profile

Full-time Professor attached to the Department of Economics. She has a Doctorate and a Master’s degree from the University of Miami, Florida, USA. She has a Licentiate (professional license) and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Universidad del Pacífico, Lima, Peru. She has extensive experience in public management and academia; furthermore, she has held various political and public positions. In 2016, she was elected Vice President and Congresswoman of the Republic, obtaining the highest vote among women in Congress, on that occasion. She was President of the Council of Ministers between 2017 and 2018. Between 2009 and 2010, she was the first woman in Peru appointed to the position of Minister of Economy and Finance, where she managed public finances in a context of international financial crisis. Before, she held the Production portfolio in 2009 and between 2006 and 2009, she was Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, where she initiated, negotiated and signed most of the Free Trade Agreements of Peru, achieved the creation of the Country Brand and that Machu Picchu be elected as one of the new seven wonders of the modern world. In 2005, she was Executive Director of the National Competitiveness Council, where she led the development of the 2005 National Competitiveness Plan, among other positions. She served as a Representative of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) in Mexico, between 2012 - 2015, she was a Professor at the Diplomatic Academy of Peru (2003 -2010). She was part of the United Nations Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) lead group (2018 2020). Currently, she chairs the global initiative Food Forever, since 2018, promoting agrobiodiversity and is part of the Board of Directors of Global Crop DiversityTrust (2019), an international non-governmental organization, made up of FAO and Bioversity International, which works to preserve diversity of crops and protect food security. Specialty area: International trade and negotiations, as well as policy design and public management.
