Resumen
As a market economy and industrialization gained ground during the nineteenth century, innovation in transport and communications technology afforded new opportunities for travel. Steamships and railways led the way in connecting continents and various regions of the world. However, the relatively high cost of visiting places outside of Europe and North America ensured that tourism largely remained an elite endeavor.
