title = "Political incorporation (in Latin America): The concept, the variations, and the cases",
abstract = "Political incorporation is a widely used but seldom defined concept in political science. This paper presents a concept analysis of political incorporation, proposing a conceptualization based on five attributes: the existence of an excluded actor, sustained policy benefits for this actor, partisan representation, corporatist representation, and personalistic representation of the excluded actor. Using a mixed conceptual structure, we argue that the first two dimensions are necessary in combination with at least one form of representation. Based on this conceptualization, we discuss a number of conceptual and process variations of political incorporation and illustrate them using historical and contemporary cases from Latin America. This exercise highlights the advantages of clear and explicit conceptualization for identifying new instances of incorporation. Substantively, the paper also provides a tool for the current research agenda on what has been called the second wave of incorporation in Latin America.",
