Abstract
This article studies the function of the sonnet in Don Quixote de La Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. It basically develops M. Bajtin's idea that the Quixote sonnets are parodic. This work finds that parody includes not only the speaker and the reader, but also the poetic effects (specifically, the metrical effects) that characterize the sonnet as textual genre, and even the whole sonnet in its artistic form. Furthermore, the author also interprets the sonnets of the Quixote as lyrical counterpoints of the narrative text and even as the crux of metapoetic discourse.
