Abstract
The optimization of maintenance and operation of naval equipment, systems, and assets has been a subject of study for many years, with various techniques proposed. Concurrently, the search for stochastic algorithms using evolutionary computation and particle swarm optimization has been successfully applied to nonlinear optimization problems with large solution search spaces. This article addresses an optimization problem for the maintenance and operation plans of the naval assets of the Brazilian Navy, where evolutionary computation is used to solve an optimization problem with a large solution search space. This involves the construction of two to six warships for over half a century. The constraints and parameters used were not found in the literature. The results of the evolutionary model and the combination of new genetic operators are innovative and demonstrate that the proposed model results in better and viable maintenance and operation plans compared to previously used techniques.
