Abstract

At the end of 1998, a year of full economic growth, after a long period of violence and armed confrontations, Nicaragua was wiped by hurricane Mitch; in result this affected 19% of its population. This study has an objective to measure the economical impact that this phenomenon had on the well-being of the households of Nicaraguan society. The variable consumption expenses and value of assets are used to assess the impact from the hurricane to medium term in the well-being of the households (two years after the catastrophe). Data collected prior and after hurricane Mitch, a "difference-in-difference" method and a Random Effects method were applied for the comparison of the variables mentioned before and between two prior periods. The results indicate that the natural phenomenon has a negative impact and affected the well-being of households tremendously. In the case of the consumption, hurricane Mitch has caused a decrease of 211.00 (with the model of Random Effects) to 230.65 cordobas (with the model of difference-in-difference) that is equal to a decrease from 20 to 22 dollars in the monthly expense of households in Nicaragua. The impact of this natural phenomenon in the value of the assets is evaluated among 5,152.16 and 4,581.0 cordobas that is equal to a decrease from 487 to 433 dollars.
