Abstract
The present paper aims to investigate whether mutual funds (MF) in Peru have been, since its inception in 1993 until December 2007, an appropriate investment opportunity for the small
savers investors and therefore whether it has turned to be an effective mean to channel personal savings or institutions to the financial markets. MFs were classified into10 categories and for each one an investment opportunity was identified. These opportunities can be considered comparable (that is to say substitutes) because of their horizon, return and risk. The most appropriate comparison method and performance measures are established for each category. This comparison is based on monthly data. Hence, the paper concludes, that in the case of small savers investors, during the analyzed period, MF’s have not been a better investment alternative than their substitutes.
