Abstract
In Ortometría (Orthometrics), probably the only metrical treatise by a Peruvian writer, Manuel González Prada (1844-1918) offers an original interpretation of the rhytmic pattern of Spanish verses. Under the influence of both A. Bello and M. A. Caro, González Prada, notwithstanding, differs from them in significant issues, as he differs also from contemporary scholars such as Ricardo Jaimes Freyre. In a most radical manner, González Prada underscores the role of the verse-pause and emphasizes the role of the “rhythmic elements” (i. e., the feet), an operation functional to the poetry and the prose of two of his last poetic works: Minúsculas (1901 and 1909) and Exóticas (1910). Keywords: Ortometría, M. González Prada, the rhythmic pattern of Spanish verse, A. Bello, M. A. Caro, R. Jaimes Freyre, Minúsculas, Exóticas
