Abstract
In recent decades, several studies have documented a pragmatic evolution in the PRC’s approach towards its diaspora, emphasizing the development of strategies and bureaucratic organization in accordance with its priorities at certain stage of national development. Nonetheless, while China’s global interdependence has brought about a higher institutionalization, it is necessary to further expound on the reach in policy formulation and the innovation that ensues from the practice of local officials. This research contributes with the economic and governmental approach in the Chinese diaspora literature from the perspective of its influence in the development of their places of origin. It explores the case of the major emigration area of Taishan, in Guangdong Province, between 1978 and 2005.
