Abstract
Apart from in-depth analysis of the multifaceted nature of intergenerational (IG) solidarity, its ongoing evolution, and the interdisciplinary dimensions of human bonding, contributors in this volume illustrate several key messages that may be particularly valuable. The first and most obvious is the importance of consistent societal dialogue on all issues of IG significance. Although chances are remote of either IG conflict or open antagonism among generations, policy makers in many countries cannot ignore looming financial pressures and major concerns about the sustain-ability of national systems of social protection due to the aging of their populations along with decreasing fertility. To make this national dialogue effective, it should be as wide as possible and well informed, embracing representatives from government and non-governmental sectors, including service providers, business representatives, academia, and civil society. Given that all segments of society are interested in the effectiveness and positive results of this policy dialogue, every effort should be made to ensure that the voices of all social groups are heard and taken into consideration in policy decisions.
