Abstract

The main objective of this chapter is to showcase the state of the art of Afroperuvian Studies to date. Consequently, we compile and analyze the discourses, narratives, and studies written about Afroperuvians while considering the progression of the historical and political contexts affecting this population, both at the individual and collective level. We further discuss what ought to be some of the main pillars of this emerging field of study and if it is fair to conceive the notion of “Afroperuvian Studies” solely from an academicist approach. Finally, we briefly explore how the field could be improved by the inclusion of non-academic voices, knowledge-production mechanisms, and different epistemologies.
